Smooth Moves

Roy TeeluckTired of getting tangled up in your round brush? Our Celebrity Stylist Roy Teeluck reveals the tips and tricks to getting your most gorgeous blow out ever.

One of the secrets to getting that perfectly smooth "salon" blowout is in the hair dryer. It’s not so much about how hot it can get but how much power it has. The more power your dryer has (I like to use a dryer with about 1800 watts) the faster it will dry your hair so it will spend less time under the heat, which is what causes the damage and breakage that can ruin even the most beautiful blow out. And of course a directional nozzle is all-important so you can direct the airflow onto each small section of hair at a time rather than blowing hair all over the place.

I start by dividing a head of hair into several 3-4 inch sections and really saturating each one with Heat Protexx heat protection styling spray. This protective styling mist is formulated with proteins and amino acids; so, it moisturizes and strengthens the hair as it absorbs the heat from the dryer to make it less vulnerable to thermal styling damage. You may need some clips to hold the sections apart.

Before I pick up the brush, I like to pre-dry the hair, which is one of the keys to getting a pro-style blowout. I take each section of hair in between my fingers about two thirds of the way down the length and aim the dryer downward over each one until it is 70-90 percent dry. The secret is to hold each section completely taut. When you let a section get even slightly loose, you create frizz and flyaways.

Then, rather than wrapping the brush around each section, I just brush it through each one about two thirds of the way down the shaft and hold it there maintaining that all-important tension. I am still aiming the dryer downward and it is following the movement of the brush. To smooth the ends, I slip the brush underneath a section and then aim the hair dryer on top of the brush. Once each section is straight and smooth, I seal the deal by sliding a comb through each one—keeping up that tension and again following my movements with the dryer.

Lastly, I use the cool shot button and blast hair all over with icy air to lock in the look. If hair is very thick and coarse, I like to finish with a light misting of Maxxishine anti-frizz and shine spray for added luster and sheen. You can also freeze your frizz-free, sleek style into place with a gentle spritzing of Comb Thru natural hold design and finishing mist.
